How much K1?

Post by alank on Thu Sep 15, 2011 10:11 pm

I know its a fish/feed dependent question but I think I may have more K1 than I need. Ammonia readings with a Nexus 310 have always been low at <0.06 but with the Nexus changed for a RDF, I get zero readings. This may mean I can remove a lot of K1 to get my bio tank running with good K1 circulation. (Currently, I get blockages as there is too much in there). Also I have a shower which is fairly mature so I have probably doubled my bio filtration area.

It may be just a case of removing K1 until I see a change in my readings for water parameters but is there a formula for working out how much K1 is required?

I think the Nexus came with 100 liters, I added another 100 liters and I had some knocking about as well so say 250 liters. Parameters were OK at <0.06 for ammonia so was this enough?

Pond is 26200 liters including filters, KC30 RDF, currently 300 liters K1, 48000 l/h turnover, shower with 33000 l/h after the bio tank, ie not solids into BHM.

The Formula is as you mention Fish/Feed rate dependent ... one example given in the literature Alan was that 50 liters K1 will handle 0.25KG feed per day.

K1 self cleaning downside is that too great an agitation via copious `aeration`/flowrate etc can effectively beat the Biofilm too death in particular during winter... Fines can be a persistent problem which your RDF should resolve.

Did you PP it prior to incorporating into the new Biotank ?

How much are you feeding the Babes ?

I would reduce it gradually if the tank is packed to capacity hindering movement.

My disappointment in the K3 oh-so-slow Bio-Film establishment Rolling Eyes might have been negated had I PP`d the media first providing a base for the primer macro-molecule initial (EPS) bio-film layer Rolling Eyes (see link)

No PP as it was taken from the Nexus straight into the bio tank. I have taken sufficient out now to get movement in the K1. I have slowed down the agitation by adding the bottom drain air diffuser so now it moves slowly. I will leave it for a week or so to see what effect there is on the water parameters.

I have never weighed the feed but would guess less than 1/2 kilo per day. They are ravenous at the moment but have not been all that bothered over summer. Water temps at the moment are 15.4 deg C.

The weather patterns have been weird yet again both seasons up to now Alan and your Babes have had ICH to contend with to boot Crying or Very sad

Cooler water / more O2 Very Happy they are recovering well and feeling a whole lot happier now ....

Do you know how much they weigh approximately ?

No idea on weight, we really need to do a measure up as they have all grown in the last 12 months. Nothing like the 1 cm per week that Pondy gets but some of last years fry are 10 inches long now.

Good Growth rate Sweetie ... and when it is most likely during the first year Alan. Very Happy

500 grams food per day (in your case) would approximate 2% BW (bodyweight) were the total combined Koi weight 25KG.

Mine grew more last year heating over Winter than any year since 05 Rolling Eyes

If we install solar heating, we are considering putting the air source heat pump back on the pond.

I would guess we have at least 25kg of koi. They vary from 70 cm down to 10 cm. There are approx 45 koi but average length is 30cm but all that is guess work. The problem is catching the small ones, its impossible unless we drain the pond. We are having a clear out next summer to offload some of the small koi.

I heated throughout Winter last year Alan to 20C but won`t be able to continue to afford to do so for the forceable given the 18% hike in utility prices recently ... Evil or Very Mad

I will cut their Winter short though or they will lose everything they have gained which has been the pattern in previous Winters until this last one.

Your `Heat Pump` ? was it much less expensive to run than an `Elecro` etc ?

Mine is Dura 10+ which will work down to -7 deg C. A fraction of the cost of Electra although I do use one of them on the qt.

you get 6 kw out for every 1 kw used (claimed).

I didn't buy from AK but can dig out where I bought from if you are interested.

Brochure, you need to look at the Dura+ models to work in winter. I had mine on overnight on Economy 10 but the timer was not reliable and I found it on after 5am and was costing too much to run. If I could get a reliable timer that would handle the current, I would use it again.

The non plus ones don't work in very low temps. The one I have will still take heat fom the air down to -5.
