Post by Admin on Wed Aug 10, 2011 7:09 am

Hi Guys... Very Happy

During the `Growing Season` I try to feed approx 2% BW (body weight) per day ....

What quantity of pellets/food do you all feed ?

Jasper Kuijper of EA following experiments recommended .85% bodyweight in one of his articles for growth Chi.

Hi All

As most of my koi are adults I have a different approach to feeding. I generally go by water parameters and or Docs for a given amount of water change. For instance. Any increase in docs( never really a problem unless feeding growth food)any increase from zero in nitrate, TDS (80ppm) reduction in P.H. from 7.2. Then I either/or/both reduce the amount of feed/change more water 24/7. I also never feed growth food as this just ends up as Docs/nitrate. Temps of pond never get above 20 degs C.

Mine are all Adults also now Dave .... but very small due to prolonged Winter fasting annually Sad

So I do feed Growth pellets during the growing season which this year has had the most impact because they were heated over Winter to 20+ C Smile

Mio For years I spent hundereds of pounds on growth pellets. But now find that the koi look much better when grown a bit slower. However this maybe due to water parameters being optimum. It can become difficult to maintain water parameters through dilution when dealing with larger ponds abiet it takes longer for impurities to buid up.

personal experience tells me that overfeeding has ruined many a good koi. I now try to take several years to grow and the colours seem to stay longer. I have no proof that this is true. However the koi seem to be healthier sinse adopting this feeding pattern.

Best Regards Dave

I don`t think many overfeed their Koi Dave ... usually the opposite is the case as it was with mine...who emerged from Winter thoroughly emaciated annually.

0.5% BW per day is barely health and maintenance sustainable and those growing Jumbo Koi such as MikeS must maximize the first year growth potential or lose the opportunity to do so....

The Koi Babe in Jasper Kuijpers experiment actually lost 200g when the feed intake was reduced to .35%. BW... Shocked
