Should be a good test for the solar panel brackets.

Before deciding on the solar panels. The firm I chose gave me a list of load calculations for maximum wind strengh + 20% for this area if I remember correctly. Not that it meant a great deal to me. However it was nice to have them as everyone did not give them in the quotes.Just another one of the many htings which impressed me.

One of the main reasons I went with them was the fact that they have been around for 50 years and have worked on quite few large electrical installations. loacally Solar panels being only a very small part of there buisness. However you can never say never. Fingers crossed

Just tested the Koi Vat Temp ... still at 16.3C despite the dreadful Winds ....

Have added more ties to the cover which had blown open revealing a quarter of the surface Rolling Eyes

Good thing the water level was quite low.

Re: Pond Temps?

Great Temps for this time of the year. My pond is now dropped 1 degree to 13 degs C. For the same amount of heat from the boiler. I have had to increase the trickle in 24/7 . As i noticed a slight increase in Nitrate. This will be due to less algea due to the addition of covers and treating the pond for blanketweend about a month ago. This increase of adding colder water on an evening together with lower ambient temps has had a detrimental effect on the overhaul temp of the pond. However I am quite happy if it holds at 13 degs for a while before taking the koi into winter

The weather has a real winters feel about it now as the rain is now mixed with snow. As it was nice and sunny yesterday the solar panels produced a nice 4kwhr. The average for Dec being only 1.4 kwhrs. Pond still holding at 13 degs with boiler being on most of the timed 2 hours. But still holding.

4KWT`s Dave .... Phab Very Happy

We have sleet here too but nothing like the Dreadful Winters in recent years.

My Ponds previously were @ 10C for 6 months in every year Twisted Evil dropping to 3C or lower at their worse prior to applying heat.

Thermo is set to 10C now which I will leave it at until the end of the month then allow them a couple of months of Winter Torpid Temps before increasing these again in Spring.

Looking on other forums, 8 deg c seems to be a popular temp to overwinter rather than allowing to go lower. What are your thoughts on this. I always worry when koi start sitting on the bottom and will raise the pond return ( heated) in an attempt to avoid this once I stop feed ing. Otherwise koi would not sit on the bottom above temps of 4 degs believing the temp of the pond being constant throughout( no thermocline)

4C is a personal preference of mine Dave.

Higher temps encourage the Koi Babes to perpetually scavenge for food which due to covering will be unavailable and result in precious wasted energy IMO.

Interestingly certain virulent Aeromonas Bacterial strains capacity for growth has a temp range from 5C upwards.

Also Algal Mats harbour quantities of said Bacteria as do Protists such as Tetrahymena in far greater numbers than that suspended in the water column which then enter the Fish during scavenging and can accumulate in the intestine producing Infection once the Fish become stressed ... affraid

I replace water throughout the Winter in a bid to dilute out Toxins/Bacteria etc in a bid to prevent stressors carte blanche .... Very Happy

Mio
As usual some very interesting points and worth consideration. However as yet I have never tried to go as low as that. 6 deg seemed to be as low as the pond would go with covers in situe

Several Members report the same Dave Smile your Pond must retain heat very efficiently Sweetie Very Happy

Many like myself though would have succumbed to zero degrees C without heating ... affraid

4C I used to achieve via an HX coil of hose OR permanent 50% per day water replacement ... but during recent Winters maintain this via an Elecro Heater instead. Smile
