Flukes and how to get rid of them

Post by DaveB on Tue Mar 13, 2012 5:46 am

According to A19 koi The cases of flukes is on the up. I used to use superverm a few years ago which I now understand is banned. One recomendation has been http://www.vetark.co.uk/Shop/Pond-Fish/Health/Fluke-Solve.aspx

What do you guys think of this or do you use something else ??

Do your Koi Babes have `Flukes` Dave ?

Praziquantal is very effective orally re internal Parasites ... and does not dissolve well in water at all Sweetie which would deter me personally from recommending it ..

ethanol/acetone are preferential dissolution mediums instead according to the available data ...

Others have different experiences with the drug discussed at length here.

No Flukes here. Personally I would rather stick to superverm, But think it was banned a few years ago.but could be wrong. It is certainly not in the koi shops

I understand that superverm has a very long shelf life if kept in the fridge. as a 1 ltr bottle could last you a very long time

I have found flukes today whilst checking for the last of costia. Skin and body flukes, I saw 4 in one pass of a slide so I guess we have a lot. I have ordered some Flubenol but cant add it until Friday as I need to give 4 clear days from the last F&MG dose. Is one treatment enough?

Flubenol is favoured by some Alan ... especially IF Skin/Body Flukes alone are the Issue ...

I personally prefer Supaverm .. but would recommend a minimum of 2 doses of Flubenol IF this is all you have access to .. then scrape/scope again etc to ensure eradication has ensued ..

The Good News is that Flub/Metro etc (which treats hexamita) among other Fluke Meds has a detrimental effect upon Costia too ... so a double whammy there Sweetie ... Wink

Fluke Meds dissolve poorly in WATER Guys (covered earlier in this thread ) so will require either Acetone/Alcohol type Solvents etc for maximum efficacy... Very Happy

Flubenol/Flub 5%/Flubendazole etc in particular is much more effective via dissolution in Acetone ... than water Wink

You cannot dose Supaverm with Goldfish Species present Sweetie ... so stick with Flub 5 for now ...

I have done 1 dose with Fluke solve, very easy to use and dissolves easily. A second dose using the liquid flubenol was added yesterday but that is very difficult to dissolve, Fish seem very happy now, no more flashing and they are all ravenous. I plan a big water change mid week with a dose of Rapid Health.

I have monitored water parameters through out and even with heavy feeding, ammonia has never risen above 0 and nitrite has not gone above 0.06.

I have just done a scrape on new koi babes and found 3 or 4 body flukes on showa and small ogon. This might be worth treating in the near future. My first choice is Superverm and have used it to great effect. I have heard all the scare stories, But it is half the price of 2 double doses of Fluke M. My main concern is I have salt at 0.3% and also last dose of combat has just gone in and requires 5 clear day before treating with standard fluke type treatments. Perhaps it requires longer with superverm. I have heard that superverm stays in the system for very long time. Your thoughts are appreciated. Best Regards Dave

Dave the salt would not pose a problem with Supaverm .. not sure about the Combat .. but were it me .. I would want ALL previous Chemicals to have dissipated from the system prior to treating with anything Sweetie ...

Good Call. I will monitor the situation and see if the the flukes are on the up. In the meantime wait 5 days and scrape again, by which time the combat will be gone especially with a 10% water change per day.

Alan ..

Everyone I have ever recommended SV to have to date not experienced ANY repercussions whatsoever when administering the med slowly along with dosing accurately re gallonage etc ... truly ... whilst achieving great results ...

IF anyone is `APPREHENSIVE` about doing/using anything at ALL .. the very agitation they feel will attract more too it affecting the outcome ...

Once a decision is made to do ANYTHING ... align with it before going ahead with such would be my advice ...

I have used it a few times without any problems. However I have been unable to get any as without a holding number for sheep the supplyers have refused to supply it.

I Have heard some people have had with a similar product Temlin which is easer to get hold of.Howver in view of the problems I am having with the koi wound I am now thinking of possibly going down the lines of CT. I understand Duncan has used CT for controlling flukes, but at quite high doses.10g per 100g I think using CT will also skin over any wounds on the koi. I have also heard from a number of people that Fluke M is usless unless used at twice the stated dose on the packet.Best Regards Dave
