KH/Alkalinity?

Post by Admin on Sat Sep 17, 2011 9:07 pm

Torrential Rains (yes the indian summer was brief here in Wales Rolling Eyes ) can dangerously deplete Alkalinity in low gallonage systems ... in particular those in soft water areas or where R/O systems are incorporated to purposely lower the TDS.

The last Deluge here filled the Vat reducing KH Values (normally 27ppm-ish) to ZERO /ZILCH/NADA Alkalinity at all Shocked

Fortunately copious Air (100 lpm) in 900 gallons of water maintained a PH of 7....

The downside of which being greater aerobic Heretotrophic proliferation and activity at 20C consuming quantities of D.O ...this phenomenon itself can have major repercussions in detritus laden environments ... and why regular purging of waste from the system is vital for fish health.

Mio

Good of you to remind us of the consequences of not doing regular maintenance. I for one am a stickler for removing waste from vortex and BB3. having just returned from 1 week holliday without maintenance. It was interesting to see that with reduced feeding and a lower temperature and lots of air the P.H. was still reading 7 this morning.( normally 7.2) I also run a very low k.H. but with a 25% 24/7 weekly water change I can manage to maintain p.H levels. However I would not normallly go on holiday at this time of year, especially ifI am away any longer.( Usually I go in winter when maintenance is at a minimum)

best Regards Dave

Torrential Rain took the Koi Vat up 3 inches killing the KH once again Shocked Not a mg could be detected in a 10 ml sample ....

Bicarb is in .... Rolling Eyes

Mio

Are you still using the trickle in system to avoid any sudden changes in p.H?

I can`t anymore Dave ...

I previously run a 6mm airline from vat to drain which siphoned out constantly and I would refill via a drip/trickle each day ... but I was replacing the airline weekly due to it clogging up Twisted Evil

I was going to vacuum the vat base today and replace a third of the water but gale force winds and torrential rain prevented my doing that ...

1 KH point will usually last 3 days unless torrential rain ensues Twisted Evil

4 inches of rain has killed the KH again .... zero mg in a 10ml sample ... Twisted Evil

PH 7.02 ..... I`m pumping half the water out as I type and will trickle the replacement back in gradually....

Fortunately the slow trickle back in has raised the KH up 1 dh point without resorting to bicarb on this occasion.... Very Happy
